PROTECTING YOUR INCOME

Income Protection for Rugby Players

Playing rugby increases the risk of injury and hence the risk of you not being able to carry out your job and get paid.

Wiltshire Friendly has been working with professional rugby since 2011. We have built an understanding of the sport that enables us to insure players at professional, semi-professional and amateur levels, so whatever level you play at, we have a plan to suit your requirements.

The plans are insurance policies designed to replace a proportion of income lost when a player is unable to follow their occupation(s) due to illness or injury.

Whether you’re playing for the love of the game at amateur level, playing semi-professionally and earning income from a ‘day job’ and from your club, or whether you are a full time professional rugby player Wiltshire Friendly can help you protect against potential financial hardship caused through not being able to work.

What type of player are you? Please click on the relevant button below to find out more details of our rugby plans. Alternatively, you can speak to our Sales Consultant, Josh Padfield, using the details at the bottom of the page.

Unlike Amateur or Semi-Professional, our Professional plan was created specifically for the professional player and is designed to fit with the income protection benefits the player gets included within their contract.

We also tie the duration of the plan into the normal retirement age of a player, which we set to 35.

As we have been insuring professional players since 2011, we have built a real understanding of the rugby world and related injuries, which assists us in assessing existing medical conditions when a player is applying for insurance.

Where players have had career ending injuries we have worked with them to manage their claim and help them move towards a non-rugby playing occupation.

We believe that a player should have all the facts available to them when making their decision as to the suitability of the plan. That's why we have only one policy guide, with all the information clearly explained.

For a semi-professional rugby player, we offer our standard individual plan designed to insure the ‘day job’, whether employed or self-employed. The individual chooses the amount of cover and benefit payment terms, within defined limits, to suit their requirements.

It is also possible to insure against the loss of income from the rugby club.

To acknowledge the extra risk that comes with playing rugby semi-professionally, we add specific terms applying to any rugby related injury. It is important to point out that any illness or injury which is non-rugby related does not have the rugby terms applied.

Testimonials

CEO - Welsh Rugby Players Association, Cardiff Blues Captain 2012-2014 & Wales International

'We all know hindsight is a great thing and is often used to reflect on what we should of done. But for me and my family we are very grateful looking back now that we took out income protection with Wiltshire Friendly when we did.

In 2015 after just signing a three year deal I developed a rare autoimmune disorder that ended my playing career literally over night. Having my income protected meant that I could get the necessary medical treatment in order to maintain a normal lifestyle while also allowing me to finish a Masters degree in Psychology. Without the support of this insurance plan we would have had to solely rely on my partners’ income during those two years.

While I accept that the insurance market is a continuously changing landscape I feel that Wiltshire Friendly provided me with personalised cover that was both fair and robust and through continual collaboration I have been able to make a successful transition into a new career.

I will always be thankful for the excellent support I received from Jon, the CEO Wiltshire Friendly and Steve at Harries, Powell & Price.'

Retired former Newcastle & Leicester rugby union player

'Taking out cover with Wiltshire Friendly insurance gave me the peace of mind during my playing career that if I was to suffer a career ending injury my financial position was secure. I did, unfortunately, suffer such an injury and the financial support received by Wiltshire helped ease my transition away from the sport.'
